Add character with our unique Dot Matrix process

Dot Matrix Grayscale Imaging is a precision process that uses varying dot sizes, densities, and depths to recreate grayscale images directly on solid materials. Whether you’re aiming for subtle gradients or bold contrast, this technique transforms surfaces into striking visual features – especially when backlit.

How It Works

Using CNC routing, laser engraving, or metal punching (depending on material), Dot Matrix patterns are created to simulate tones and shadows – no printing or film required. It’s a tactile, permanent way to render imagery that interacts beautifully with light.

What Can You Create?

Dot Matrix opens up a wide range of creative and functional applications:

  • Wall Panels featuring portraits, landscapes, or custom branding
  • Architectural installations with storytelling elements
  • Signage and wayfinding with artistic flair
  • Backlit feature walls with stunning contrast and detail
  • Customized art pieces for hospitality, retail, or residential spaces

From subtle gradients to bold contrasts, the design possibilities are endless.

What Are the Limitations?

While incredibly versatile, Dot Matrix Imaging has a few key parameters:

  • Materials: Works best with metal, wood, solid surface, acrylic, and plastics
  • Sizes: Custom panel sizes available based on project needs
  • Colors: Natural material tones are used, though paint may be applied for an enhanced effect
  • Techniques: Primarily CNC routing, but laser engraving or metal punching may be used depending on the application and desired materials
  • Illumination: Compatible with rear-illumination for extra depth and impact

Resolution depends on material choice, panel size, and viewing distance. We’re here to help guide these choices to achieve the best visual output.

How the Order Process Works

Getting started with Dot Matrix is simple. Our surfaceLAB team collaborates with you to:

  1. Define your design intent and image needs
  2. Select the best material for your application
  3. Customize the size, depth, and layout of your panel
  4. Review proofs and finalize details before production

Everything is built to spec, with careful attention to how your design will perform in its final environment.
